When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the destinations you sail to and the shore excursions available at each port, to a full range of entertainment and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages.

The 9-month-long cruise aboard the Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate World Cruise captured the attention of social media towards the end of last year. Matt started Royal Caribbean Blog in 2010 as a place to share his passion for all things Royal Caribbean with readers. He oversees all the writers at Royal Caribbean Blog, and writes a great deal of content on a daily basis. So far we've seen a couple videos with people being unaware of the benefits top tier Royal Caribbean cruisers get on any sailing, but nothing substantial. People watching on TikTok seem quite intrigued by the idea of spending that long on a cruise ship, and it almost seemed like a reality show to viewers. It's no secret that Royal Caribbean has had its first world cruise planned for over a year, but social media took notice when the sailing began this week.

I have met so many people, experienced numerous cultures, and had the most amazing times in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru... The Lake sisters tell TODAY.com that other than this, they've yet to encounter any reality television-worthy bits of drama to mark on a Bingo card, but they do have a podcast where they plan on sharing their journey with followers. The sisters say they'll share the same cabin during their 9 months on the trip, and that they don't expect to butt heads too much with each other or their parents, since they're close and quarantined together during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Where is The Ultimate World Cruise going?
The video has over 300,000 views so far and the squares range from the mundane to the absurd. People on TikTok became as interested in the cruise itself as the personalities of the creators. Given that the vast majority of the public has never been on a cruise before, all sorts of assumptions and predictions were made.
What’s really happening onboard?
Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas cruise ship departed Miami in December with more than 800 guests and plans to spend the next nine months traveling to over 150 destinations across 65 countries. The Ultimate World Cruise, a 274-night voyage aboard the Serenade of the Seas by Royal Caribbean Cruises, departed from Miami on Dec. 10. Some users following the events of the cruise ship appear to be ogling the voyage with a sense of suspicion and a sobering dose of reality.
The first traverses North America and South America over 67 nights and includes stops in Brazil, the Caribbean and Antarctica. It visits all seven continents, more than 150 destinations in 65 countries and 11 great wonders of the world. We’ve had such an enriching time so far — and we’re not even halfway through the entire experience. Despite being away from campus and working remotely, I don’t have any FOMO for things going on at UCF.

One person began tracking all the content creators on board so that others could easily follow along. It’s amazing, and I have been able to try and eat a variety of dishes every day. It’s a sea day, and my first stop on the ship is to head up to Deck 12 to watch the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean. Below, Madison shares what a typical (and not-as-dramatic-as-you-may-think) day is like on the Serenade of the Seas, from waking up to the sun rising over the Pacific Ocean to studying for classes in one of the ship’s cafes. TikToks about the Ultimate World Cruise have since received millions of views. And it seems like everyone on TravelTok has been keeping a close eye on these seafarers, eagerly awaiting updates about the potential drama at sea.
To prepare for the 9-month voyage, she arranged for a friend to stay at her home with her dog and reduced the hours of her job in marketing. For the next several months, she'll work remotely and will be taking advantage of the various stops and sights the voyage will have to offer. "That is something that has kind of helped to impact my desire to travel," she explains. "I think (TikTok users who watched the post) were tagging Royal Caribbean like 'you need to fix this,'" Brandee Lake explains. "They did at least take the time to come to me and you know, ask how everything's going now."
I am so eager and excited to be on this journey with my family, who are the closest people to me. I am majoring in health sciences, and I plan on starting nursing school in the fall; I would like to become a travel nurse. I enjoy being in school, and doing it while seeing the world has been one of the most incredible experiences. If I can use my nursing degree to help others while continuing to travel, that would be the dream. As a souvenir, I will go into a bookstore when we’re in port and ask the bookseller their favorite book.
Beyond that, those documenting their time on the ship have yet to report any reality TV-worthy drama for TikTok to consume. The posts from those on land have mostly consisted of documenting who is aboard the ship, creating “bingo cards” for events on the ship, and cheering on drama. But she told "TODAY" that after she posted her TikTok, the cruise’s hotel manager made it a point to greet her during dinner. She and Shannon Lake, 42, said that nothing has happened yet on the ship that would be worthy of reality TV. Although no major drama has unfolded aboard the ship, those following along on social media appear eager for reality TV-style turmoil to unfold.
Jessica Maddox, an assistant professor of digital media at the University of Alabama where Bama Rush takes place each year, said she knows first-hand how morally gray it can be to wish drama onto the lives of real people. From Machu Pichu in Peru to The Taj Mahal in India, you can choose your own adventure — or experience them all on the Ultimate World Cruise. The cover of the book was different from my original copy, so I had to get it. I am now able to reread one of my favorite stories, and I have a very special memory of finding this copy. But the third and fourth segments, the "Ultimate Middle East and Mediterranean" and "Ultimate Europe and Beyond" itineraries, respectively, are still available to book. If you're one of the many people captivated by this nine-month cruise, you too can join the sailing.
